Bill Promises To Censor the Internet

Last Updated on Tuesday, 1 November 2011 02:30 Written by a2e Tuesday, 1 November 2011 02:30

The PROTECT-IP bill is making its way through the halls of the United States government, and besides an unfortunate name change, the bill has been altered by the House of Representatives in such a way, it would essentially allow the government and/or various corporations that feel infringed upon the ability to censor the Internet in whatever way they see fit.

Perhaps that last part is wrapped in some hyperbole, but then again, after reading portions of the updated bill, as well as some of the reactions to it, it’s pretty clear that, if passed, the American public could soon be using a very different version of the Internet than what we’re used to. The sad thing is, besides a small section of informed reactions to the bill, very few in the American public seem to know and/or care about the implications of PROTECT-IP, which, thanks to input from House of Representatives, now goes by the unfortunately-named E-PARASITE Act.

Des Moines, Iowa Heavy Equipment Auction

Last Updated on Friday, 21 May 2010 02:40 Written by a2e Friday, 21 May 2010 02:40

Cat Auction Services, recognized the world over for its commitment to building customer loyalty, has announced it will hold an unreserved public auction in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday, June 17. Coming on the heels of auctions in Houston, Texas, and the Twin Cities, Minn., the Iowa auction returns Cat Auction Services to the city of its inaugural auction in late 2008. The event will be held at McAninch Corporation (4001 Delaware Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa) and will include a broad assortment of heavy equipment from a number of manufacturers. The auction will begin at 9 a.m. local time.

Featuring a wide variety of excavators, track-type tractors, ag tractors, loaders and trucks, among other equipment, the Des Moines event is expected to draw bidders from across the United States and around the world. Interested buyers are invited to view the entire equipment list online prior to the event by visiting www.catauctions.com. Real-time online bidding will be available on the day of the auction through the company’s website. Participants are invited to register early and access inspection reports on the equipment.

Cat Auction Services President Rick Albin said, “We’re thrilled to be coming back to Des Moines to the site where we kicked everything off a year-and-a-half ago. As a company, we’ve come a long way in a short amount of time — our audiences have grown significantly larger, we’ve drastically improved our online bidding system and the services and products we provide have expanded. But our commitment to providing buyers and sellers with the best auction experience possible has not — and will not — change.”

Albin noted that the feedback the company has received surrounding its auction-theater setup and innovative Leaderboard™ display has been very positive. “We’re hitting all of our targets and the support we’ve received from buyers and sellers alike reinforces the fact that we’re delivering on our promise to provide great value to all involved. Our offerings — including our detailed inspection reports and warranty options — quite simply have no equal. And the wide range of exclusive Caterpillar services we provide give our buyers more options, more flexibility and more confidence than anyone else can provide.” Albin stated that more than 230 pieces of equipment have been consigned to the Iowa auction and more items are being added weekly — many of which qualify for an extended Equipment Protection Plan.

In addition to offering on-site bidding, Cat auctions attract thousands of bidders online. Through Cat Auction Services’ proprietary online bidding system, the company is able to tailor the experience to match that of its on-site participants. Albin said, “Honestly, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of an on-site auction — it’s an exciting, fast-paced event. But recognizing that a huge number of our customers are following us online, we’ve done absolutely everything in our power to bring that level of energy to the Internet, ensuring everyone is a part of the action.”

Cat Auction Services entered the heavy equipment auction arena in late 2008 and has been active across the country. Reviews from all corners have been positive, and the auctions have drawn buyers from 49 states and nearly three dozen countries.

By conducting auctions that provide value to both the buyers and sellers, Cat Auction Services complements and enhances the relationship between Cat dealers and their customers. Cat Auction Services was formed through a unique partnership of Cat dealers with the endorsement of Caterpillar, Inc. The addition of a proprietary auction arm to the portfolio of services available to Cat customers and others in the heavy equipment industry builds upon the company’s existing customer loyalty. London Fine Antique Arms and Armour Auction

Last Updated on Sunday, 28 March 2010 02:20 Written by a2e Sunday, 28 March 2010 02:20

A pair of 40-Bore pistols owned by accomplished big game hunter Major Dick Cooper, best friend of Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke and friend of Ernest Hemingway, are to be offered at Bonhams, Knightsbridge as part of the Fine Antique Arms and Armour sale on 29th April 2010. The pistols, by John Manton & Son, are expected to sell for £6,000 – 9,000.

When Hemingway went on a safari in 1934 it was Cooper who played host to him at his house in Babati, which subsequently featured in Hemingway’s book Green Hills of Africa. Cooper also advised Hemingway on the guns he should use on a hunting expedition in East Africa.

Major Cooper became friends with von Blixen in 1927 when he was taken on a three-month safari with von Blixen’s company Tanganyika Guides Limited. Years later von Blixen, who was married to Out of Africa author Karen Blixen (pen name Isak Dinesen), wrote to Cooper: “After nearly ten years of hardships endured together and many bottles of whiskey shared I dare to affirm that we are the best friends in the world.” von Blixen left his rifles to Cooper on his death in 1946.

Having settled in the United States after World War II, Cooper kept on his farm in Africa (near Lake Manyara, Tanzania), and is said to have died in 1952 by drowning in a Cape buffalo hollow. Cooper enjoyed the unusual distinction of having shot down a low-flying German aircraft from the trenches in France in 1917 with his .450 Holland & Holland rifle, normally used for shooting deer.

Tulip Hill Estate in Harwood, Maryland for Auction

Last Updated on Wednesday, 10 March 2010 02:01 Written by a2e Wednesday, 10 March 2010 02:01

Concierge Auctions will host a luxury real estate auction of the historic Tulip Hill estate in Harwood, Maryland on April 10. Previously offered to $7.5 million, the property is selling with a suggested opening bid of $1.65 million. The sale is being conducted in cooperation with Gary Gestson, a certified Historic Property Specialist with Long & Foster Real Estate.

Considered one of the finest Pre-Revolutionary War historic estates in the United States, Tulip Hill is a grand Georgian plantation house built around 1756 by the Quaker merchant-planter Samuel Galloway. Frequent visitors included George Washington and Robert E. Lee.

“The magnificent home and grounds that encompass the Tulip Hill estate, combined with its extensive, storied history, makes this truly a one-of-a-kind property,” Gestson stated.

The home has been beautifully preserved and restored on more than 52 acres that includes an expansive terraced garden, water frontage and a pier on the West River. Among the home’s modern conveniences are central heat and air conditioning and a fully renovated kitchen.

The property was named for its grove of grand tulip poplar trees, many dating to the early 18th century. Located at the edge of a high plateau, with the land falling rapidly away on all three sides, the impressive approach to the house from the river by a tree lined lane exists today as it did more than 250 years ago.

Tulip Hill includes a two-level brick main house measuring 52 feet wide and 42 feet deep, and two 20-by-24-feet brick end wings. The approximately 8,000-square-foot mansion includes seven bedrooms, a large attic, full stone basement, and nine wood burning fireplaces.

“The upcoming auction of Tulip Hill represents a rare opportunity for the discerning buyer to own an estate with extreme aesthetic and historical significance,” stated Laura Brady, Co-Founder and Vice President of Marketing for Concierge Auctions.

Located in Anne Arundel County near Annapolis, Harwood is approximately 30 miles from Washington, D.C. and about 35 miles from Baltimore. The county has several historic homes dating to the 1700s in addition to Tulip Hill.

The auction of the Tulip Hill estate at 4621 Muddy Creek Road in Harwood, Maryland will be held on Saturday, April 10 at 11am EDT. The properties are available for preview daily from 12pm to 3pm and by appointment. View Terms and Conditions of Sale for full details.
