Sidney Nolan Ned Kelly Painting Makes $624,000 IBP

Last Updated on Sunday, 25 April 2010 11:00 Written by a2e Sunday, 25 April 2010 11:00

The first Important Australian Art auction for 2010, held on 21 April, yeilded some exceptional results for all categories of Australian art from contemporary and modern through to traditional.

The highlight of the sale was undoubtedly Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly (1956) which was hotly contested by bidders in the saleroom and on the phone and eventually knocked down for $624,000 IBP – more than three times its high estimate.

Other noteable results include a record auction price achieved for a painting by German-born artist Ernest Lotichius. The large oil on canvas entitled Mount Macedon and River Campaspe, Victoria, Australia, June sold for $168,000 IBP.

Arthur Streeton’s stunning Sydney Harbour landscape, Coogee Bay 1907 attracted a huge amount of interest at the viewings and was fiercely contested on auction night. The painting easily surpassed its higher estimate, acheiving $750,000 IBP.

First Class Marksman Painting by Sidney Nolan Auctioned at Menzies Arts Brands

Last Updated on Friday, 26 March 2010 02:00 Written by a2e Friday, 26 March 2010 02:00

Sidney Nolan’s painting of Ned Kelly, First-Class Marksman, sold for $5.4 million at Menzies Arts Brands in Sydney making it the most expensive Australian artwork ever sold at auction.

The purchase beat the previous Australian art auction record of $3.48 million for Brett Whiteley’s The Olgas for Ernest Giles, in 2007.

Art-market analyst Michael Reid said the result was a ”wonderful money-vitamin shot in the arm to the industry that has been anaemic for the last 12 months”.

”Sidney Nolan is one of Australia’s most important 20th-century artists and the Kelly series is his most significant contribution to Australian art history and theory,” he said. ”The Kelly myth is so central to the way we see ourselves.”
