Ekco Bakelite Radio Auctioned in Lichfield

Last Updated on Tuesday, 5 October 2010 11:20 Written by a2e Tuesday, 5 October 2010 11:20

A Bakelite radio from the 1940’s has recently sold for £750 at auction, (30th September, Richard Winterton of Lichfield).

The radio manufactured by British firm Ekco and introduced in 1945 is one of the most iconic of all radio designs, famous for the circular Art Deco case. Originally designed in the early 1930’s by the modernist architect Wells Coates (1895-1958), the Model A22 was the final variation on the circular cased cabinet theme. Such a case would not be possible in wood so the design took full advantage of the use of Bakelite plastic which could be moulded to form the shape. The speaker is in the centre and the indicator dial forms the circumference with the operation knobs below.

In the 1940’s you could choose between a jet black case with chrome fittings or as here a mottled brown version simulating walnut. Apparently, according to radio collectors, the black case was more popular then as now due to its aesthetic appeal, with the brown being the rarer model, (although ironically of lesser value). Other colours such as green could be ordered from Ekco and these are extremely rare and very valuable collectors’ items.

Mint circular Ekcos to not turn up at auction that often these days and a UK internet bidder seized the opportunity to fight off two telephone bidders to secure it at £750.

Elsewhere in the same sale, Lot 261 a gold tie pin gifted to a chauffeur by Edward Prince of Wales in 1923 sold for £420 and a collection of early cameras totalled over £3,000.

The next Collectors Sale is in December and entries are currently being invited. Contact Richard Winterton Auctioneers on 01543 251081 or email lichfield@richardwinterton.co.uk for further information.

Queen Elizabeth I Miniature Portrait Auctioned in Lichfield

Last Updated on Sunday, 30 May 2010 02:00 Written by a2e Sunday, 30 May 2010 02:00

Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) made a striking appearance at a local auction house, albeit in the form of a sixteenth century miniature portrait.

The 6cm high oval portrait miniature of our iconic monarch had been brought into Richard Winterton’s routine valuation day by a local client.
The Queen is depicted in her famous attire painted in watercolour in intricate detail. Although unsigned, experts at the auctioneers attributed it to possibly be the work of the famous miniature portraitist Nicholas Hilliard (1547-c.1619). Entered into the 27th May Fine Art Sale in Lichfield, the iconic miniature generated huge interest from parties all over the world. Associate Adrian Rathbone comments:

‘We had pre-sale enquires from clients all over the world due to the internet coverage. The live bidding facilities we offer enabled these potential buyers to participate in the auction in real time….an important feature in today’s market’.

Lot 201, essentially a museum piece was contested to £4,800, won by a UK buyer on the phone who outbid two other phone and numerous internet bidders. The delighted vendor had incorrectly been advised some years ago by another party that it was a nineteenth century copy.

In the same sale Lot 11, an Edwardian mahogany bracket clock discovered in Lichfield sold for £3,000 and Lot 18, a watercolour by William Hoggatt (1880-1961) sold for £2,900. Lot 206, a Chinese pale jade belt hook discovered languishing in a Tamworth property brought £2,100.

The next Fine Art Sale is 22nd July and entries are currently being invited. Phone Richard Winterton Auctioneers for further information on 01543 251081 or email lichfield@richardwinterton.co.uk.

James Bond Golden Gun for Lichfield Auction

Last Updated on Saturday, 17 April 2010 02:02 Written by a2e Saturday, 17 April 2010 02:02

The Collectors Sale being held by Richard Winterton Auctioneers of Lichfield, on Tuesday 27th April, will include a replica ‘golden gun’ commemorating the 1974 Roger Moore film ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’.

Anyone who has seen the film will remember the infamous villain Scaramanga played by Hammer Horror legend Sir Christopher Lee. Scaramanga is one of the most memorable Bond villains, not only renowned for his three nipples but ingenious golden gun. The gun was disguised from harmless everyday objects such as a cigarette case, lighter, cufflink and pen. There is a scene in the film showing Christopher Lee putting together the gun and killing someone. The weapon is one of the most suave and sophisticated of gadgets from any Bond film to date.

In a memorable grand finale, Scaramanga and Bond have a shoot-out in the former’s ‘fun house’ where naturally Bond sees off his evil nemesis.

There is a huge market for movie memorabilia with collectors keen to acquire items from movies for pleasure and/or investment. The original gun used by Christopher Lee would be a priceless artefact of movie history.

The example offered on the 27th April was not used in the film but is a limited edition 20th anniversary replica made of yellow metal by S.D. Studios Ltd. This faithful edition dismantles into the respective components, although buyers will be pleased to know it does not fire bullets and is purely decorative. The pre-sale estimate is £1,500-2,000. An example signed by Christopher Lee sold for £8,000 two years ago.

For further information contact Adrian Rathbone at the Auctioneers on 01543 251081.
