You know when you buy a certain car (like my salmon-pink PT Cruiser), and then all you see are those cars on the road? Well, working with posters has totally improved my poster-eye in that now I can’t seem to escape them.
Take this Sunday’s New York Times, for example:

Edward Prince of Wales Tie Pin for Lichfield Auction
Last Updated on Sunday, 19 September 2010 04:00 Written by a2e Sunday, 19 September 2010 04:00
An exquisite tie pin gifted by Edward Prince of Wales, (1894-1972) (Later King Edward VIII) to a chauffeur in 1923 is to appear at auction on 30th September.
Discovered on a valuation day in Lichfield, the 15ct gold pin is surmounted with an enamelled ‘E’ and plumes contained in the original case with letter from St James’ Palace expressing the Prince’s gratitude.
In 1923 Prince Edward visited the midlands on a tour. A local policeman ‘R’ 47 William Jones was given the prestigious and responsible task of chauffeuring the future King back from Stratford Upon Avon on the last day of his visit to Birmingham. Photographs are included showing Mr Jones seated in the driving seat of a suitably grand motor car outside Shakespeare’s birthplace. Prince Edward can be seen descending the steps towards the awaiting car.
Prince Edward later became famous for his notorious relationship with American divorcee Wallis Simpson. In 1936 he abdicated to be with the woman he loved.
The Royal gift will appear as Lot 261 in Richard Winterton’s Fine Art & Collectors Auction on 30th September at The Lichfield Auction Centre. Contact the auctioneers for further information on 01543 251081. Free valuation days are held in Lichfield on Tuesdays from 10am to 4pm.

Jaguar XK120 for Sydney Auction
Last Updated on Tuesday, 10 August 2010 12:00 Written by a2e Tuesday, 10 August 2010 12:00
Bonhams Australian motoring division has been entrusted with the sale of a rare 1949 Jaguar XK120 alloy-bodied Roadster from the highly esteemed collection of The Late The Hon. John Dawson-Damer.
On Saturday 13th November Bonhams Australia will hold their first collectors’ motor car auction as a wholly owned subsidiary of the international company. Early entries for the sale indicate that a mouth watering array of cars will go under the hammer not least of which is the aforementioned Jaguar.
This rare car is the 17th Jaguar XK120 made and is one of only 58 right hand drive alloy-bodied roadsters produced. Chassis number ’660017? was sold new in Australia and carries extensive local race history including a number of appearances at the world famous Mount Panorama circuit at Bathurst, NSW. Having passed through a number of local owner/racers the car was purchased by world famous Lotus collector/historic racer and rally ace John Dawson-Damer in the late 1970s. Having been fully restored by Dawson-Damer in the mid-late 1990s the car has seen little use since and is offered for sale on the open market for the first time in over three decades. It is estimated to fetch at least AUD $140,000.
Robert Glover head of collectors’ motor cars at Bonhams Australia comments “Having overseen the successful sale of John’s exceptional collection of Lotus racing cars in late 2008, we feel both privileged and honoured that Bonhams have been entrusted with the sale of further motor cars from one of the most highly regarded collections in Australia and indeed the world.”
Also offered for sale from the same collection will be a 1979 Lotus Esprit JPS Edition. Purchased new from the factory by John Dawson-Damer, this single owner from new car is offered for sale without reserve. It will give collectors’ an affordable opportunity to purchase a part of the Dawson-Damer Lotus legacy not to mention a rare example of Lotus’s first true super car.
The Late Honourable John Dawson-Damer was an expatriate Englishman who spent most of his life in Australia. During his life John became heavily involved in motorsport mainly through rallying but also became famous throughout the worldwide motoring enthusiast group by amassing the most significant collection of Lotus Single-Seater racing cars in the world outside of that owned by the family of Lotus founder Colin Chapman. John, a much loved and highly revered historic motor racer and enthusiast did a huge amount for the motor racing movement both in Australia and Europe. Tragically he was killed whilst competing in England in one of his beloved Lotus Formula 1 car in 2000. Since then his family have continued to maintain some of his superb collection. In 2008 6 of the 7 Lotus racing cars from the collection were sold in Sydney. His children retain and race a significant Formula 1 Lotus racing car in memory of their late father.

Second Sale of Fine Motor Cars and Automobilia at Reims-Gueux
Last Updated on Sunday, 8 August 2010 01:00 Written by a2e Sunday, 8 August 2010 01:00
After the success of last year’s auction, Bonhams is pleased to announce the second sale of Fine Motor Cars and Automobilia at the ‘Weekend de l’Excellence Automobile’ held on the former site of the French Grand Prix circuit of Reims-Gueux on Saturday 11th September 2010.
Amidst the rich history of the site, the weekend event celebrates classic cars and motorcycles with Bonham’s auction taking place amongst the spectacular demonstrations and aerial displays.
Very rare to the market is a highly desirable Aston Martin ‘Sportsman’ shooting brake. One of only two cars manufactured in 1996, and entirely hand manufactured in aluminium, this sought after model is estimated at €400,000- 500,000.
One of the most famous cars in the world, a 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage, is also one of the top lots. This beautifully presented car is one of only 17 left-hand drives manufactured to Vantage specification with a manual 5 speed transmission and has only had two previous owners. It is estimated at €300,000- 400,000.
A 1957 DB2/4 MKII Drophead Coupe, estimated at €140,000- 180,000, represents a fantastic opportunity to acquire one of the rarest post-war Aston Martin models, which was created to cater for ‘sports car enthusiasts with a family’. This particular car with full ownership history was the last to be completed on the DB2/4 MKII chassis and has been used on several long European tours where it has always performed faultlessly.
A further highlight is a 1986 Aston Martin Volante, described by former Chairman Victor Gauntlett as, ‘a stylish thoroughbred, beautifully built, luxurious, fast and immensely safe,’ the V8 was built in several variants, one of the more exclusive being the Volante convertible which was also ranked as one of the world’s fasted convertibles. It is estimated at €75,000- 100,000.
Bonhams is also delighted to present an as new 2001 Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina estimated at €125,000 – 175,000. To mark the world renowned Carrozzeria’s 70th Anniversary in 2000, Ferrari supremo Luca di Montezemolo invited Sergio Pininfarina to submit designs for a front-engined roadster embodying the spirit of past Ferrari Maranello classics. Choosing the 550 Maranello coupe as the basis, the maestro proposed a return to the traditional barchetta style.
Only 448 cars were manufactured, each individually numbered and carrying a plaque inside with its own serial number and Sergio Pininfarina’s signature. The result was an instant classic, with production reserved for a handful of faithful Ferrari clients including the owner of this immaculate example, the 264th produced.
Further entries range from a 2005 Ford GT, one of 101 cars delivered new to Europe, through to a 1948 Pontiac ‘Woodie’ to a brace of concours condition Chevrolet Corvette roadsters from 1957 and 1958.
