We all know we should have an updated sitemap but it can take some weeks if not months to get a decent number of pages indexed in search engines even so. For those just setting out this is a great disadvantage so I’ve come up with a sort of plan to move things along a bit quicker and I think it works.sitemapjoke

I’ve discovered that search engines tend to take bites of data from a site. What I mean is although Google will download a sitemap containing 10,000 links, it then takes it’s time indexing those links. I’ve no real solid evidence other then the times I’ve done it, but it seems breaking up your sitemap into manageable chunks gets your pages indexed quicker, a lot quicker.

I think this might be because they are zoning the data into pools and then spending a set amount of processing time on each pool. So it makes sense that having more then one file in a pool or even having a file in more then one pool means your data will be processed longer and therefor links indexed quicker.

Luckely the free Sitemap maker recommended by Google has a setting of only 500 links. So we can use that as our handy friend – http://www.xml-sitemaps.com On the site you simply put in your domain and it creates the sitemap for your site but only the first 500 links (unless you buy the full version).

What I suggest is to create a sitemap for each category of your auction by simply placing the link to your category in the box rather then your root domain. Do this for each top level category and then save them all in one folder off the root of your site /sitemaps name each one with an easy to remember file name sm1.xml,  sm2.xml.

Then you use the following to register your sitemaps in the main search engines;

For MSN Sitemaps Inclusion A simple Link;

For Ask Sitemaps Inclusion A simple Link;

http://submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

For Google Sitemaps Inclusion Sign-up And Add The URL For Each Sitemap File;

http://www.google.com/webmasters

For Yahoo Sitemaps Inclusion Sign-up And Add The URL For Each Sitemap File;

Http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com

For Live Search Inclusion Sign-up And Add The URL For Each Sitemap File;

As I said at the start this is just a method to get your site indexed quicker and it’s better then waiting as far as I’m concerned. Once you are happy with the number of indexed page you can setup an automated process using a mod or a script to created one sitemap and let that sit there updating. When you do that simply add a line in your robots.txt file to point search engines at that file – Sitemap: http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
